Stories
Freshly baked bread is priceless: it is not only good food but a symbol of home, security and hope for tomorrow. Its warmth and taste pampered people especially in winter when food was more difficult to find. Once upon a time the whole village got together and lit the oven only a few times a year to save wood, baking the bread produced with their own wheat in shifts. It was necessary to make a fire for 5 or 6 hours, using long larch trunks. Each person had their own task. The grain came from the fields of the village families. The bread had to last all winter and when it became hard it was softened and eaten with hot milk or wine. Even today, in memory of this ancient tradition, every year some ovens in the villages of the Aosta Valley are lit and so they return to heating, lighting and cooking as they once did. It is truly a privilege to be part of this tradition.
